This October, DERMAspa gave a portion of our total proceeds to our partners in cancer research at Spa4ThePink and the Center for Integrative Medicine at Anschutz Medical Campus. With your help, we were able to raise $3,400 during the month of October!

University of Colorado Hospital’s Center for Integrative Medicine (TCIM) offers physician-managed care that emphasizes the wellness and healing of the entire person. “Integrative Medicine is the blending of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies with conventional care for the prevention and treatment of health conditions. The correct “balance” of CAM and conventional treatment is individualized, taking into account not only the medical condition but also the person – treatment that is appropriate for one person isn’t necessarily right for the next person with the same condition.” click HERE to read more.

Spa4ThePink is a local non-profit organization providing cancer patients undergoing treatment for all types of cancer with free therapeutic and integrative spa treatments. “Spa4ThePink is dedicated to Changing the journey for individuals who are ‘healing from cancer’ by: (1) Merging Integrative Mind-Body Therapies into the healing journey within our community; (2) Providing Spa Days and Professional Spa Products to cancer patients in rural areas and with leading cancer centers; (3) Sharing our training with licensed Spa Professionals.”

In addition to donating a portion of our proceeds during the month of October, DERMAspa also honored Breast Cancer Awareness  Month, cancer patients and survivors, by sponsoring a Spa4ThePink Day on October 26, 2012. Patients undergoing treatment for cancer and their care givers were given free treatments custom designed for their specific needs. We enjoyed treating the patients and caregivers who participated in our Spa4ThePink Day and look forward to assisting these patients again.

Dr. Asarch and his team at the Asarch Dermatology and Laser are Colorado’s leaders in Skin Cancer Awareness and Treatment. Dr. Asarch helped start the dermatologic surgery program at the University of Colorado and he studied directly with Dr. Mohs, the founder of the Mohs Micrographic Surgery for skin cancer.

Mohs is the most effcective method for treatment with the highest success rate of all

skin cancer procedures. Mohs allows surgeons to identify and remove tumors one layer at a time while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Dr. Asarch has successfully completed over 30,000 Mohs Surgeries. Maintaining your skin’s health is as important as maintaining the health of the rest of your organs and body. Protection from the sun prevents damage to the cells of the epidermis. Over time this sun damage can lead to the production of lines, wrinkles, precancerous lesions and actual skin cancers.Know your body, so you can recognize changes and possible Melanomas. Full body skin examinations- screening skin for benign or cancerous lesions- are essential for optimum health maintenance.  Half of melanomas are first identified by patients themselves. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends an annual full body exam to allow early detection of treatment. An important part of prevention is mole tracking with the ABCDE danger signs: A=asymmetry, B=irregular border, C=irregular color, D=increase in diameter, E=evolution or changes in the mole. A Body Mole Map is available through the American Academy of Dermatology website.

Check your skin several times a year if you have multiple risk factors such as excessive exposure to the sun, tanning bed use, or a history of precancerous skin lesions, cancer or frequent sun burns.

Only about one third of the population performs self-exams for the signs of skin cancer and a significant number of those people are unable to see or recognize suspicious lesions on their own.  A visit to your Dermatologist is important for a thorough evaluation of any areas of concern.

The number of non-Melanoma skin cancers in the United States is still on the rise. Researchers have attributed this rise to sunbathing and tanning that was popularized after WWII. Sun damage accumulates over your life meaning that a small dose every day, every week or even every summer will make the damage that much worse later in life.

If you are diagnosed with basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the most effcective method for treatment. With the highest success rate of all skin cancer treatments, Mohs allows surgeons to identify and remove tumors one layer at a time while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
