The Order of the Day- Your Skin Care Routine.

If you read our blog, you already know how important skin nutrition is from the inside out. However, did you know that skin care products work optimally only if applied in the correct order?  Some questions we hear often when a patient or client orders a product from the  DERMAspaRx Skin Nutrition Line is “How do I use this?  Am I supposed to moisturize before applying eye cream? When do I use the serum? Do I use all of the products once a day or twice a day?” The order in which you use products can be very confusing unless you know what the goal of each product is.

Dr. Asarch suggests this simple 5 step rule for your daily skin regimen. After Cleansing, apply:

1. Prescription Topical Medications
2. DERMAspa Rx Skin Nutrition Products (Serums then Creams)
3. Sunscreen
4. Facial Foundation if applicable
5. Facial Powders if applicable
6. Other colored cosmetics if applicable

Let’s look further into his second step, Serums then Creams. The easiest way to keep your skin care order straight is to think thin first and then build up to the thicker products.

Serums

Serums cater to a variety of skin concerns. Serums contain the most potent dose of anti-aging ingredients; antioxidants, peptides, and skin brighteners, etc. you can find in non-prescription products. Serums leave out thick, occlusive moisturizing ingredients such as petrolatum or mineral oil that keep water from evaporating. They also contain fewer lubricating and thickening agents, like nut or seed oils. Most serums are water-based, eliminating oils altogether. Without the excess moisturizers, you are left with a highly concentrated, nutrient rich serum which should be the first product applied after cleansing and prescription treatments.

Eye Products

Eye products can be serums, gels, creams and moisturizers. Some are gel form more like a serum, while others are heavier creams. These products can work to minimize fine lines, address puffiness and dark circles and provide long term anti-aging benefits. Apply eye products after facial serums, but before heavier moisturizers.

Creams

In the morning you want to apply a moisturizer over a serum to banish dry skin and prepare for makeup application. Heavy creams have thick, air-tight, moisturizing agents that smooth the surface of the skin, prevent water loss and provide a barrier between your skin and environmental conditions. In the evening, moisturizers serve to repair your skin while you sleep.

It is important to read the labels of the products you are using and ask your Dermatologist if you have any questions about when to use them.

Never forget to wear sunscreen! Even on winter days the sun’s damaging UV rays can age your skin and put you at risk for sun damage and skin cancer.
