The Truth About Acne

Why some people get acne and others don’t may always be a mystery. A lot of factors play into why people may be prone: hereditary, hormones and stress all may be factors. Acne most commonly starts during puberty, when hormones levels start to change in the body. Oil production increases and when mixed with dead skin cells, oil can become trapped under the skin, causing the start of acne. Women are most commonly affected with acne longer than men, due to the many hormonal changes throughout their life (i.e. oral contraceptives, pregnancy and menopause). No matter young or older, acne is an embarrassing disease that can affect the person and leave life-long scars.

Here are a few acne myths:

Myth # 1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene, not by dirt or surface skin oils.

Washing may help in the overall treatment of acne by removing excess oils, dead skin cells and foreign substances, but washing alone will not clear it up or prevent it. The best approach to hygiene and acne: Wash your face twice a day with a mild soap, pat dry, and use a prescription acne treatment.

Myth # 2: Acne is caused by diet.

Extensive scientific studies have not found a conclusive connection between diet and acne. In other words, food does not cause acne. Not chocolate. Not french fries. Not pizza. Nonetheless, some people insist that certain foods affect their acne. If that is the case, avoid those foods. However, eating a balanced, nutritious diet can have a dramatic effect on the health and degree of inflammation that occurs in your skin. Acne is an inflammatory disease so although we cannot specifically implicate chocolate or pizza as the cause, a healthy diet together with proper medical treatment, will bring about the best control of acne.

Myth # 3: Acne is simply a cosmetic disease.

It does affect the way people look and does not otherwise pose a threat to your health. However, acne can result in permanent scars. Acne itself, can affect the way people feel about themselves and touch their whole lives.

Myth # 4: You have to let acne just run its course.

The truth is, acne can be treated successfully. If the acne products you have tried haven’t worked, there are many different medications available to control the problem. With the products available today, there is no reason why anyone has to endure acne or get acne scars.

Today there are many options when treating acne, we’ll tell you some of our favorite products and treatments here at the Asarch Center:

Products/Prescriptions:

If you’re looking for products we love our acne line, formulated by Doctor Richard Asarch himself. Choose from our Oil Control Serum, Oil Free Moisturizer or Clear Away Clay; each product uniquely addresses excess oil production, inflammation, bacteria overgrowth and clears plugged oil glands. Depending on the severity of acne, medications are commonly used. The major cause of acne is plugged oil-gland openings in which case Retin-A, Azelex, Differin, or Tazorac are great options. In severe cases Accutane, a vitamin A derivative may be prescribed.

Treatments:

Deep Cleansing Clay Treatment

Our blemish repair treatment promotes the healing of acne breakouts. Using a soothing steam treatment, combined with a citrus exfoliation and deep cleansing technique prepares the skin for the application of a specialized purifying mask.  Adding the optional extraction procedure helps clear clogged pores. This clarifying treatment concludes with the application of DERMAspa RX nourishing and antibacterial serums for refreshed and healthy skin.

NeoLTS (LED light therapy)

The NeoLTS Non-Invasively improves fine lines, skin tone, texture and overall clarity, reduces inflammatory acne lesions, relieves pain and reduces edema and erythema.

Acne Lift Treatment

This peel safely and gently exfoliates acne and oily prone skin while preventing future breakouts.

Salt Peels

Microdermabrasion is a highly effective, clinically proven, non-surgical approach to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin.  This treatment also helps to boost collagen, reduce poor size, and diminish acne scars.

Sublative Rejuvenation

At the Asarch Dermatology, we offer Sublative Rejuvenation, a safe and effective cosmetic technology that works on virtually all skin tones. It is neither laser nor light-based. Instead, SUBLATIVE uses the power of fractionated bi-polar radiofrequency (also known as gentle energy currents) to deeply penetrate the skin and stimulate collagen production beneath the surface, while keeping the outer layer of skin intact. Consider Sublative Rejuvenation to diminish acne scars, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, fade sun damage and age spots, and improve skin texture and tone.
