Springtime is the perfect time to say, “out with the old, in with the new”. As you plan your new routines and new wardrobes, it is time to spring a surprise on your jaded winter skin – with a new spring skin care routine!

Shed your old skin and bring on the spring glow with these skin rejuvenating tips from our skin specialists at Asarch Dermatology.

Go liberal with sunscreen slathering: Spending too much time outdoors? Springtime is no time to go easy on sunscreen even if you spend most of the time indoors. Any amount of UVA and UVB rays can damage your skin. While UVB is the main cause of skin cancers and sunburn, UVA rays are responsible for premature aging. Most sunscreens protect against UVB rays but, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is designed to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

Skin specialists at our Colorado skin care center recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 which can filter out 97% of UVB rays. Slather the sunscreen on multiple times a day, especially after being out in the sun for longer times or after a swim as no sunscreen is truly waterproof.

Indulge in spring cleaning: Spring is the perfect time to – spring clean your skin with gentle exfoliation!

The skin has its own cycle of rejuvenation through the process of “keratinization”. New skin cells are continually produced in the deep inner skin layers. While these get pushed up to the surface, the older cells on the surface are broken up into simpler proteins called keratin, which eventually die forming a dry and hard layer. Dead skin cells not removed from the surface can pose a risk for bacterial infection and clogged pores, leading to breakouts, dull and uneven complexion.

Exfoliating is the ideal way to get rid of the dead or damaged skin cells to encourage new, healthy ones to take their place. Avoid harsh products that have crystals or sand if your skin is extra sensitive and use natural, gentle scrubs. Cosmetic dermatologists at Asarch Dermatology can guide you on different options for exfoliation including microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

Binge on eye cream:  Bright and beautiful skies can also mean more squinting, inviting wrinkles and fine lines to gather around the eyes. Besides, the harsh UV rays can destroy the natural protein collagen in the skin that maintains the volume and texture of skin. While it is mandatory to wear sunscreen and eyeglasses, fight the fine lines with an eye cream that has a good dose of antioxidants.

Say yes to skin health nutrients: Your skin needs a whole lot of nutrients that keep it looking fresh and glowing. Get plenty of natural vitamin A from yellow-orange colored fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and eggs. Add lean proteins, whole grains, and omega-3 from fatty fish to complete your natural skin-health diet regime.

Go easy on makeup: When it comes to makeup, less is more in Spring! In the heat, the best of makeup can slide off the face, giving a patchy, dull look. Use an oil-free, water-based primer or foundation and choose creamy eye-shadows if you must. Waterproof mascara and liners can complete the minimalistic look.
