An allergic rash that lasts until Thanksgiving? Forget ghosts — that’s really scary. Before you paint a Wonder Woman headband on your forehead, glue on sparkly lashes or dribble fake blood over your skin, think ahead to November 1st. How you treat your skin on Halloween may have a frighteningly big impact on how it looks and feels long after the candy is gone.

Minimize Pre-Halloween Treatments

If you’re planning to apply new makeup products or paint on your face on Halloween, hold off on chemical peels and other facial treatments in the days leading up to the holiday. Some people experience redness or irritation after dermatological treatments, and applying new products may just irritate the skin more.

Use a Barrier

Paint your face green on Halloween and you may wake up the next day looking a little… queasy. If you plan to paint your skin, apply a barrier product first to keep the color from being absorbed into the skin. You may have to visit a professional makeup store to find a barrier cream or spray. Retailers that sell clown makeup often sell these products too.

Reject Comedogenic Products

Halloween gets expensive, so it may be tempting to buy cheap makeup to turn yourself into a ghost or accentuate your zombie look with DIY fake blood made with glue. But your skin will pay the price. Only apply products that are labeled as non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores.

Remove Makeup Thoroughly

Before your sugar rush turns into a crash, drag yourself to the bathroom for a thorough post-party cleanup. Remove all makeup and paint using cold cream or makeup remover before washing your face with a gentle cleanser. Inspect your skin in good light to make sure you leave no patches of glitter or makeup behind. Finish up with moisturizer.

Rejuvenate Post-Halloween Skin

Even one night of heavy-duty Halloween makeup can leave your skin looking dull. If you get dressed up for multiple parties, there may be a lot of damage to undo come November. It’s the perfect time to indulge in some skin-nourishing treatments, like microdermabrasion, dermaplaning or a deep-cleaning facial. Get your skin looking its best before heading into the holidays.
