Hot chocolate and cozying up next to the fireplace, there are many things that make the winter season enjoyable. But despite these luxuries, there is one aspect of the winter season that causes many of us discomfort, irritated skin. During these cold and dry winter months, our skin is at its most vulnerable state. But there are a few easy tips to follow to ease the symptoms of the most common winter skin ailments.

Combat Dry Skin- Due to a significant drop in humidity levels, dry skin is perhaps the most common complaint dermatologists see every winter. In an effort to combat this common issue, we recommend changing one simple thing in your routine; take lukewarm showers. Hot water is extremely drying to the skin and can exacerbate many skin conditions. We also recommend swapping out your soap for a creamy body wash, doing so will add moisture to the skin.

Smooth Rough, Bumpy Skin–  Similar to dry skin, it is not uncommon for people to report experiencing rough or bumpy skin. This is often the result of a sort of allergic reaction to the wool and knit materials people wear all winter long to keep warm. This issue can be quickly remedied by either wearing a protective layer underneath or avoiding the material altogether. But for some, the rough, patchy skin is another symptom of dry skin. If your rough skin is not due to exposure to an itchy fabric, you may want to invest in a humidifier. Keeping a humidifier in your home will help you keep your skin feeling smooth and supple all winter long!

Avoid Flare-Ups- If you are like the millions of Americans suffering from psoriasis, eczema or rosacea, winter can be an especially brutal time. For minor flare-ups, patients can use OTC hydrocortisone to provide relief, but if your flare-ups are more severe, you need to see your dermatologist.  Only your dermatologist can diagnose and determine the right treatment plan to help you manage and treat your flare-ups.

Ease Cracked Hands- There are plenty of activities and reasons why your hands might be exposed to the harsh winter cold. It is important to apply a hand moisturizer every time after your hands have been wet.  Remember to moisturize and wear gloves to avoid dry, cracked skin.

Protect Your Skin From the Sun- Just because the sun is covered by the clouds does not mean it is not dangerous. In fact, UV rays are more intense in the winter as they can be reflected by the snow and ice, so be sure to apply sunscreen every day.
