Summer and sunscreen are synonymous, and often, many of our clients at Asarch Dermatology ask us whether it’s necessary to use sunscreen during the winter. There is just one answer to this question – Yes.

Benefits of using sunscreen during the winter

You can protect yourself from UV radiation

Fact: the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun can wreak havoc on your skin. From dryness to discoloration, your skin can experience intense sun damage. Using a sunscreen with a high SPF can protect your skin from harm.

You can keep your skin supple and soft

Sunscreen also has a moisturizing effect, which hydrates your skin cells, keeping them healthy. Your skin will look strong and supple and will feel soft and silky by the end of your winter skincare routine.

You’ll continue to look younger

Skin that has been exposed to the ravages of pollution, UV radiation, and cold winds looks thickened, sallow, leathery, and wrinkled. You may develop spots and patches on your skin, making your skin look older than it is.

You’ll be protected from the risk of skin cancer

The most common types of skin cancer are caused by overexposure to UV radiation. With winter snows, ultraviolet ray reflections can increase the intensity of UV radiation by as much as 50%. This is where sunscreen will help. With the right SPF, you can keep your skin safe and healthy.

Tips to use sunscreen effectively this winter

Now that you know how beneficial sunscreen is to your skin during the winter, let’s take a look at how best we can use it to protect the skin:

Choose physical sunscreens over chemical ones

Physical sunscreens contain usually contain either zinc or titanium, which reflect UV radiation off the skin. These physical agents protect the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. Chemical sunscreens, scatter ultraviolet rays as they penetrate the skin. A sunscreen containing both gives you the greatest protection from both UVA and UVB.

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you leave home

Apply sunscreen a good 15-20 minutes before leaving home. If you are involved with a strenuous physical activity, showering or swimming, it is best to reapply since the sunscreen will wash off even if they claim to be waterproof. At the Asarch Center, we recommend you use a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen every day.

Don’t forget to protect your lips. Many lip balms now contain sun blocking agents.

Have your doctor examine unusual spots and cuts

Not all spots, discoloration, chapping, and dryness are due to the cold. Sometimes, they could be indicative of precancerous lesions or a medical condition. If you notice any unusual or persistent spots on your skin, have them checked out immediately.
