In part 1 of my blog series on the sun’s damaging rays, I addressed tanning addiction. It is a natural progression to discuss the importance of sunscreen. Protection from the sun prevents damage to the cells of the epidermis. Over time this sun damage can lead to the production of lines, wrinkles, precancerous lesions and actual skin cancers. Now there’s yet another reason to avoid the sun: it results in the loss of subcutaneous fat, leaving your face looking markedly older than your chronological age.

A recent study has shown that sun exposed skin produces a compound which inhibits fat cell production. Over time this leads to loss of fat which reduces facial volume contributing to a sunken, aged appearing face.

Common remedies include soft tissue fillers to replace lost facial volume. Of course, wearing sunscreen helps to keep you looking younger, since your sunscreen helps to preserve collagen, thereby preventing facial lines and wrinkles.

If you have dry to normal skin, use DermaSpaRx Sun Protection System– A hydrating antioxidant sun-protective system that guards against the harmful effects of ultraviolet exposure. The moisturizing SPF 30 formula provides broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB through its active blocking agents and is ideal for dry to normal skin.

If you tend toward oily or combination skin, use DermaSpaRx Sun Protection System Oil Free– The same benefits of our regular sunscreen in a non-greasy formula.

In addition to sunscreens, you should also wear a hat and sunglasses to protect the top of your head, your hair and from squinting your eyes. If the damage is already apparent on your skin, watch for part 3- correcting the damage done on Monday, Feb. 13.

To your skin health,

Dr. Richard Asarch, M.D.
