Understanding how sclerotherapy works
Sclerotherapy has been used for decades for the treatment of problematic veins. Spider veins, which appear purple, black, or blue in appearance, can impact one’s self-confidence. By treating these veins with sclerotherapy, they can be eliminated. Sclerotherapy is the use of a sclerosing gel that is injected directly into the problematic spider veins. The gel works by closing up the veins and allowing blood to flow to larger, healthier veins. In the meantime, the closed veins will be naturally absorbed by the body and fade in appearance. Spider veins treated with sclerotherapy may take a few weeks for optimum results, but the results are permanent. This does not mean that patients may not experience newer spider veins in the future. However, the treated veins will not reemerge.
Who is a good candidate for sclerotherapy?

Patients also need to be open and honest about their medical history and any medications they may be taking that may interfere with the sclerosing treatment. Sclerosing treatment is not recommended for patients who:

• Are breastfeeding
• Have had blood clots
• Have heart conditions
