For women, estrogen plays a significant role in the firmness, flexibility, moisture and even the color and texture of skin. When your estrogen levels decline, the dermis loses collagen and elastin. The skin becomes drier and less flexible. Estrogen deficiency speeds up your skin’s aging.
That Saggy Look
With aging the epidermis becomes more permeable and susceptible to irritation from the outside. The skin cells that make up the epidermis start to break up and lose their neat, brick-wall-like alignment. Skin makes fewer new epidermal cells and the epidermis becomes thinner. The pigment cells located in the bottom layer of the epidermis decrease in number, but the remaining ones get bigger. Oil and hair production also decrease. The result is that your skin appears thinner, paler and blotchy.
In the dermis, collagen fibers diminish. These fibers have more cross links, which make them stiffer and less resistant to stretching, so skin tears more easily. Skin starts to get a loose, saggy appearance.
