As much of the country bundles up for the frosty temps that accompany a silver winter, many people are getting more than just rosier cheeks. Dry and cracked skin is the most common complaint during the winter months. But there is no reason to suffer through this winter with dry and cracked skin. Here are 8 ways you can treat dry skin this winter.

See Your Dermatologist

As your body’s largest organ, your skin deserves to be treated with kindness. A dermatologist can diagnose the cause of your dry skin and create a treatment plan. In some cases, dry skin can be symptomatic of an underlying issue so, it is best to get examined by a professional.

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!

You may think that it is fine to use the same moisturize year-round, but you would be mistaken. As weather conditions change so should your skincare routine. For the winter months try an oil-based moisturizer rather than a water-based one to retain more moisture.

Wear Sunscreen

I know what you are thinking “I thought I only had to wear sunscreen in the summer.” Wrong! Winter sun can still damage your skin.  You must wear sunscreen every day. Not only does sunscreen protect your skin from the sun; it adds an additional moisture barrier.

Give Your Hands Some Love

The thinner skin on the back of your hands is more prone to be dry. To keep your hands soft and supple, liberally apply hand cream throughout the day and wear gloves when outside. Remember, it is important to re-apply hand cream any time after your hands have been wet.

Avoid Wearing Wet Socks or Gloves For Extended Periods of Time

Wearing wet gloves or socks (especially wool ones) for a prolonged period can irritate your skin, causing cracking or sores.

Buy a Humidifier

While we might feel nice and toasty inside our homes,  it is the dry heat our heating systems blow that can dry out our skin. In order to combat this, we recommend purchasing a humidifier. Humidifiers get more moisture in the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out.

Avoid Super Hot Baths or Showers

While soaking in a hot bath or shower may seem like bliss in the winter months, it is actually doing more harm than good to your skin.  The intense heat from the water actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin which can lead to moisture loss.  In Colorado, your skin will start to dry out after 3-4 minutes after drying, so apply your post bathing moisturizers as soon as you can.
