“Nutrition plays an important part in the health and appearance of our skin. Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, Phytochemicals and Minerals are all important…” Dr. Asarch, The Beautiful Skin Diet
We know that our overall health can be impacted by our diet, but what is less known is that what we eat can greatly affect the appearance and health of our skin. With Thanksgiving dinner being just about a week away, you are probably already considering the menu. There are many foods in season this time of year that are good for your skin health, especially those that contain skin boosting vitamins. Vitamins are organic nutrients that are necessary in small amounts for normal metabolism. Most vitamins must be provided by the diet or by supplements because only Vitamin D, K and B are manufactured by the body. Below are some common Thanksgiving foods that contain the vitamins you need for good skin health.
- Sweet Potato (Vitamin A, C)
- Turkey Giblets (Vitamin A)
- Broccoli (Vitamin A, C)
- Carrots (Vitamin A)
- Pumpkin (Vitamin A)
- Squash (Vitamin A)
- Almonds (Vitamin E)
- Walnuts (ALA-Alpha Linolenic Acid)
In addition to vitamin rich foods, eating nutrient rich fruits and vegetables that contain beta-carotene gives skin a healthy, golden glow. Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoids, which are highly pigmented (red, orange, yellow), fat-soluble compounds naturally present in many fruits, grains, oils, and vegetables. It is also an antioxidant that helps reduce damaging compounds produced by daily stress. Beta-carotene is not only good for immune system and reproductive health, but it’s the key to healthy glowing skin. Some of the same Thanksgiving foods that are rich in vitamins are also loaded with beta-carotene, such as:
- Yellow/Orange vegetables: carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, winter squash
- Dark green and/or leafy vegetables: kale, broccoli, spinach, collard greens, turnips and their green leaves, beet leaves, mustard and dandelion greens
- Deep colored fruits: sour cherries, prune plums
