Winter is still here, but thoughts of Spring and warm weather are starting to creep in. There is still time to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and spider veins and shrink fat cells before you shed the winter coats and start wearing warm weather clothing.

Stretch Marks:

Stretch marks are caused by a breakdown of collagen. Whether from pregnancy or weight changes, stretch marks resemble scars- with newer stretch marks ranging from red to purple in color and older stretch marks appearing white or almost silver in tone. At the Asarch Center, we offer a laser treatment called Fractional Skin Resurfacing. This procedure regenerates skin cells and stimulates collagen to create a more uniform skin surface. Clinical evaluations have shown up to a 75% improvement in treated stretch marks three months after the last treatment. Fractional Skin Surfacing is a non-ablative laser, meaning the overlying skin is left intact.

If redness or dis-coloration persist after treatment with Fractional Skin Resurfacing, other options may be recommended including use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser.

Spider Veins:

Spider Veins involving the legs is a common problem, most often affecting women. Small purple of red veins can form anywhere on the leg from the top of the thigh to the ankle. While spider veins do not pose a health threat, many people who have them find them unsightly and often attempt to conceal them with clothing or cosmetics. In the Spring and Summer months, this can mean avoiding shorts and bathing suits out of embarrassment.

The tendency to develop spider veins is often inherited, especially those on the upper thighs. Pregnancy and prolonged standing or sitting, which increase pressure in the veins of the legs, seem to play a role in developing spider veins. Hormones, especially estrogen, also appear to be involved.

A simple treatment called sclerotherapy can be used to correct unwanted spider veins of the legs. The procedure involves injecting a small amount of concentrated salt solution into the vein. Unfortunately, each spider vein or cluster of veins may require more than one treatment to make them permanently disappear.

Although no one has discovered one clear cut method to prevent the onset of these veins, some authorities believe that the use of support hose, weight control and excercise may be beneficial.

Tighten Skin and Break Down Fat Deposits:

Many of us experience hesitation about baring our bodies in warm weather. Stubborn fat deposits can leave an uneven appearance on the skin in even the fittest of people. As featured on The Today Show, The View and in Elle and W magazines, Exilisis a state-of-the-art, powerful, non-invasive, radio frequency (RF) device that provides thermal energy to break down fat deposits and tighten skin. No anesthesia, no prep time in advance of treatment, and no downtime when it’s finished.

It has been used to remove stubborn fat deposits of the abdomen, inner and outer thighs, bra area, love handles, arms and knees. The treatment is usually quite comfortable and feels like a hot stone massage. The results are best seen after 4 treatments (1-2 weeks apart), althought some effect can be seen after just one. If you happen to be a smoker, your circulation can be compromised, so additional treatments may be required.
