Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is highly effective, clinically proven, non-surgical approach for removing the outer layer of the skin. This technique results in the rejuvenation of aged skin and reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, hyperpigmentation and scars. This procedure may be done on any part of the body.

At the Asarch Dermatology, our medical aestheticians will help you choose which type of microdermabrasion is right for you.

Why Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabraision is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage, and stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion can:

  • Diminish age spots and black heads.
  • Lighten hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin).
  • Exfoliate your skin, resulting in a refreshed appearance.
  • Minimize the appearance of stretch marks.
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
  • Treat acne and the scars left by acne.

Microdermabrasion helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that’s abundant when you’re a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

During the procedure, small crystals are sprayed with a calculated amount of force over the surface of the skin.  Next, the crystals are vacuumed off along with accumulated dead skin cells. This action also stimulates the production of collagen beneath the surface of the skin. Using this technique, epidermal cell structure is able to regenerate, resulting in a 30% increase in the skin’s elasticity, which produces beautifully radiant skin.

What Results Can I Expect From Microdermabrasion?

After just one 45 minute treatment, patients have reported that their skin tones and skin textures have greatly improved. The appearance of wrinkles becomes less apparent, pores are minimized, and even scarring appears to become less noticeable.

Microdermabrasion works best when performed as a series of treatments, though skin can look and feel smoother after just one treatment. After a series of treatments oiliness is decreased, dilated pores are less pronounced, and areas of thick skin are thinner. Fine lines and wrinkles can also be diminished.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Men and women of all ages can benefit from microdermabrasion.  Important factors to keep in mind are your skin type, coloring, and medical history.

What Should I Expect After a Microdermabrasion Treatment?

There is no downtime with microdermabrasion and you can return to your normal activities immediately. Your skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure so be sure to use sunscreen, especially immediately following a microdermabrasion session. After your treatments, your healthcare provider may recommend a special moisturizer or facial product to enhance and prolong your result.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion may cause redness and swelling, which should subside within a few hours. Skin may be flaky and dry for a few days. Bruising can occur from the suction and may last several days.
