HOW IMPORTANT IS CLEANSING YOUR SKIN AFTER THE GYM?

face-offDid you recently start a new exercise routine or join a new gym? If so, you are not alone.

Consistently in the top 5, and commonly the #1 New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight and get in shape. January is a time for a renewed dedication to eating healthy and getting fit. Many people will choose indoor activities as the weather in many parts of the country in January is not ideal for outdoor exercise. The first couple of months of the year can be a busy time at your health club or gym, which can lead to packed locker rooms and the temptation to skip your post-workout shower. In addition, many of the popular new workouts are happening in stand-alone studios instead of gyms, which may not provide showers. Even if you skip the shower, take the extra time to cleanse your face to avoid plugged oil glands, acne and a dull appearance.

During exercise, your skin can accumulate perspiration, grime and oil. You should thoroughly cleanse your skin directly after completing exercise to clear your pores and remove the sweat and grime that have built up during your workout. Harsh detergents are not necessary to accomplish this, just a mild cleanser or cleansing cloth if you are on-the-go. If you don’t have access to a cleanser, rinse your face with water at the very least.

Which Cleanser is Right for You?

Bring your cleanser to the gym with you to avoid shocking your skin with a new product. Cleansing is a necessary step in any skin care regimen and using a cleanser that works with your skin type is key. First, figure out which skin type you are: Sensitive, Dry, Normal or Oily, and then use a product that is made for your skin type.

Determine Your Skin Type

  • Sensitive skin is easily irritated by chemicals and the environment, generally has finer pores, appears thinner, can be more prone to broken capillaries and may flush easily.
  • Dry skin can be flaky, feel itchy, is easily irritated and may feel tight after cleansing.
  • Normal/Combination skin will generally have medium size pores, healthy coloring and a smooth, even texture. The t-zone may be more prone to oil build up, while the cheeks may be more prone to dryness.
  • Oily skin tends to appear shiny with enlarged pores, and can be prone to blackheads and blemishes.

“Cleansing is something you should do once in the morning and once before bed in addition to post workout. This step allows your moisturizer and anti-aging products to absorb better and do their job. It only cleanserstakes a minute, but it makes a big difference in your overall skin health.can be prone to blackheads and blemishes.”- Dr. Richard Asarch, MD

Find the right cleansercleansers

If you have sensitive or dry skin, you will want to use a gentle cleanser that does not contain harsh exfoliants. Look for an enzyme-based cleanser or gentle foaming cleanser that contains skin calming ingredients like aloe vera gel. DermaSpaRx Enzyme Facial Cleanser contains gentle enzymes to remove makeup, dirt and impurities without stripping away the skin’s natural moisture, leaving the skin clean yet soft and smooth. Try to avoid using hot water as this can further irritate your sensitive skin.

If you have normal, combination or oily skin, you’ll want to use a cleanser with a little more power. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) have been called the “skin miracle” – a group of organic carboxylic acids used for centuries to cleanse, exfoliate and improve the texture of the skin. AHAs are able to penetrate the pores deeply for a better cleanse. AHAs can be irritating, so you should try the cleanser sparingly at first to make sure your skin can handle it. DermaSpaRx AHA Facial Cleanser contains alpha hydroxy acids and anti-inflammatory agents to exfoliate, remove excess oil and damaged skin, leaving a healthy, youthful glow.
