Cleanse Your Skin After the Gym!

This is the time of year for change, resolutions and a renewed dedication to eating healthy and getting fit. For those of you who work-out all year long, the New Year can be a busy time at the gym with all the “resolutioners” coming in for a new start. This can lead to packed locker rooms and the temptation to skip your post work-out shower. Likewise, many of the popular new workouts are happening in stand-alone studios instead of gyms, which may not even have showers. Even if getting a full body wash after a work-out is not possible, be sure to cleanse your face and exposed skin to avoid plugged oil glands, acne and a dull appearance.

SportswipesDuring exercise, your skin can accumulate perspiration, grime and oil. You should thoroughly cleanse your skin directly after completing exercise to clear your pores and remove the sweat and grime that have built up during your workout. Harsh detergents are not necessary to accomplish this, just a mild cleanser or cleansing cloth, such as DERMAspaRx Face Off Cleansing Pads or  DERMAspaRx Sportswipes from Dr. Asarch, if you are on-the-go. If you don’t have access to a cleanser, rinse your face with water at the very least.

Which Cleanser is Right for You?

Bring your cleanser to the gym with you to avoid shocking your skin with a new product. Cleansing is a necessary step in any skin care regimen and using a cleanser that works with your skin type is key. First, figure out which skin type you are: Sensitive, Dry, Normal or Oily, and then use a product that is made for your skin type.

Determine Your Skin Type.

Sensitive skin is easily irritated by chemicals and the environment, generally has finer pores, appears thinner, can be more prone to broken capillaries and may flush easily.

Dry skin can be flaky, feel itchy, is easily irritated and may feel tight after cleansing.

Normal/ Combination skin will generally have medium size pores, healthy coloring and a smooth, even texture. The t-zone may be more prone to oil build up, while the cheeks may be more prone to dryness.

Oily skin tends to appear shiny with enlarged pores, and can be prone to blackheads and blemishes.

If you have Sensitive or Dry skin, you will want to use a gentle cleanser that does not contain harsh exfoliants. Look for an enzyme based cleanser or gentle foaming cleanser that contains skin calming ingredients like Aloe Vera Gel. My recommended product is DermaSpaRx Enzyme Facial Cleanser. The gentle enzymes remove makeup, dirt and impurities without stripping away the skin’s natural moisture, leaving the skin clean yet soft and smooth. Try to avoid using hot water as this can further irritate your sensitive skin.

If you have Normal, Combination or Oily skin, you will want to use a cleanser with a little more power. Alpha Hydroxy Acids have been called the “skin miracle” – a group of organic carboxylic acids used for centuries to cleanse, exfoliate and improve the texture of the skin. AHAs are able to penetrate the pores deeply for a better cleanse. AHAs can be irritating, so you should try the cleanser sparingly at first to make sure your skin can handle it. My recommended product is DermaSpaRx AHA Facial Cleanser. This cleanser contains alpha hydroxy acids and anti- inflammatory agents to exfoliate, remove excess oil and damaged skin, leaving a healthy, youthful glow.

Cleansing is something you should do once in the morning and once before bed in addition to post work-out.  This step allows your moisturizer and anti-aging products to absorb better and do their job. It only takes a minute, but it makes a big difference in your overall skin health.
